Linocut 2

The Ansteys Building is a Art Deco style building and was constructed in Johannesburg in 1937. One of my favourite periods and styles of design is the Art Deco era and this led me to use this building as the base for my next print making exploration.

For this piece i was guided to the art of reduced Lino cutting which involves the use of one piece of linoleum that will be cut down to create multiple layers of one image. I first started by sketching out the building and the cut out the background which just left the silhouette of the building. After i had printed the solid block of the silhouette i then proceeded to reduce the image further by removing the area in which the shadows of the building would lie. This part i found tricky as with Lino cutting everything is flipped.

The final image is ok but i did get the shadows wrong which helps to warp the perspective of the image. I don't consider this a failure as i learnt a hole lot of valuable lesson when it comes to separating images into layers.
